The Advantages Of Starting A Home Business

By R. Landis

There is no doubt that the biggest attraction for starting and operating a home business is to become your own boss. But this is only partially true as your customers will always be your bosses. I have been self-employed in numerous business ventures for many years, and the major portion of that time was spent working from my own home. Freedom was my number one reason for becoming self employed. It is not so much the potential to generate a substantial income or the ability to grow equity, it is simply the sense of freedom and independence that being the boss affords. This means setting your own schedule, working at your own pace and earning what you wish. As long as you get the work done, satisfy your customers and clients and meet your deadlines, you can work in your bathrobe if you so choose, if no one is coming over for a meeting. More significantly, you will not have play office politics.

While it may not be a good reason to start a business solely on the prospect of making big bucks, it is true that the majority of people do have the potential to make more money by owning and creating a business than they do working for a paycheck. This is because when you are working for someone else; there are just a limited number of hours in a day for which to earn an hourly wage or a commission. This is the primary reason why most people cannot get wealthy as a traditional employee unless they invest their money in something independent of their work. Trading time for money will never get anyone rich.

On the other hand, whenever you have a business of your own, you can multiply yourself by hiring others to increase the overall revenue of your business. This will in turn multiply the number of your customers who will buy your goods or services, you can duplicate your business model and open in new geographical areas, and you can duplicate and expand the number of products that you sell. Once you have built a business that is generating revenues and profits, duplicating what works can greatly increase your personal income and equity.

Even without duplicating, you can set your own wages, put in more hours to complete a job if necessary, and remain in control of that project. Too often in a business, you will have to wait for nine other departments to get on board before you can finish a task. Whenever you working at a pace that you control, you can ascertain just how long every task should take, you can charge customers accordingly, and then even finish the project on your own if it is feasible.

Having the ability to create your own work environment and the ability to be flexible in how you operate the business are two more of the major advantages of starting and operating a business from home. For starters, instead of spending time commuting to and from work, you can use this would be commuting time to get work done or have more time to do as you wish.

The average employee commutes at least one hour each day. That is five hours a week in which you have flexibility to do as you choose. If you like, you can walk the dog at noon, be there to pick up the kids right after school, be at home to let the plumber or electrician in, take your car for repairs, and do a plethora of other personal needs on your schedule, without hurting your business responsibilities. And there is no boss or employer that you have to ask, or vacation days that you have to burn.

You also have the opportunity to work in an office setting of your choice, decorate as you like, and decide which high-tech and no-tech appliances are to your liking. For the millions of people who have moved from cubicles to home offices, these personal choices are a major factor. Additionally, if you are green conscious, you can regulate your own heat, shut off unused lights and even go solar-powered if you so choose. While many businesses today are getting in step with the green environmental movement, plenty are not. You, as your own boss, can do so and feel that sense of doing something good for Mother Earth in your own little piece of the world.

Operating a business from home also qualifies you for any number of the tax benefits associated with operating a business, even if you work a regular job and operate your business only part time. As soon as you open for business, a portion of your utility bills are tax-deductible against business revenues, a portion of your transportation costs (equal to the percentage of time and mileage your car is used for business) are tax-deductible, and even this book that you just purchased is an allowable deduction for educational purposes. While you will pay some self-employment taxes, you can typically benefit by more deductions with a home-based business.

Is Your Mind Set Up For Failure Or Success?

By Christina Helwig

Your thoughts can sabotage your efforts even if you dont intend them to. What you think habitually will influence your life more than any other condition or circumstance around you. The words you use and the things you devote your attention to determine if you are thinking success or failure oriented thoughts.

Pay Attention To Your Thoughts

Are you an optimist or a pessimist? The answer to this question will dictate much of the success that you either do or do not achieve in your life. An optimist is able to see solutions to problems. They do not ignore the bad in situations, they embrace it and choose to work around it. That simple mindset opens up opportunities. By trying to think of how can I make this work instead of its hopeless, doors open up. An optimist will see ways to fix a problem that a pessimist never will.

Pessimists on the other hand live in doom and gloom. Their minds are so clouded with negativity that they can only focus on themselves and how bad things are. They completely miss opportunities that are right in front of their noses because they are caught up in complaining and feeling sorry for themselves. Complaining solves nothing. It only makes a situation worse. When you find yourself complaining I want you to pinch yourself hard and think of something positive. This goes for everything in your life. If you are thinking negatively about another person, situation or circumstance you need to reframe the issue. If you start out negative you will only see the bad aspects of the issue and your world will never change.

If you however focus on the good you will change your entire point of reference. Everything has two parts or sides. If something is a little bad it must be a little good. If it is horrible then there must be something about it that is fantastic. I recently had a friend who was laid off. At first she was upset and then she was unbelievably excited. She got a great severance package and has since started her own business. In the middle of something negative a positive was found and she is much happier than before.

I challenge you to find the good in situations. This is not always an easy task. If you are having trouble doing this watch a few movies on Rwanda and you will quickly see that your life is practically perfect and the things you have to worry about are nothing compared to what is happening in other parts of the world.

Pay Attention To Your Words

Your vocabulary also colors the way you think. If you get home from work and say that your day was hard, you are likely to have more of those days in the future. Anytime the circumstances of the day match up with the hard day, you will feel tired and not very happy about your day. Simply changing how you word statements like this will make a big difference. Say something like I was very productive today and I got a lot accomplished. At first you will feel like you are kidding yourself but over time this will change your perspective and will result in better and better days. I no longer complain about being tired or that I was really busy. I rest and then get right back to doing the things I like to do.

If you are using negative language it will affect how you think, plain and simple. Your words matter whether you want them to or not. By paying attention to the words you use and the thoughts you think you will move yourself into a success mindset. Ask yourself each time you have a thought or you say something: Does that resonate with my vision of what I want to create in my life? If it doesnt change it right away. Thinking negatively is just a bad habit that can be changed. Success comes from building up a series of habits that support you and push you forward to your goal.

Six Sigma Implementation - Is Continuity In The Cards

By Craig Calvin

When a business is switching from their normal processes to the Six Sigma discipline, they should expect a platform of efficient and improved processes. Team leaders need to make every effort to make certain that the conversion process is not hampered by any unnecessary reasons. If expected benefits of the project are to be realized, then the Six Sigma implementation must be seamless.

In order for Six Sigma implementation to be efficacious, an well laid out plan is crucial. There are various things that may occur that could stymie the process if the plan isn't designed to be realistic and achievable. Participation by all in the organization is vital, and every effort should be taken to assure that the Six Sigma project processes don't inhibit employees from their daily duties of running the business. An extra burden may cause resistance to the project. A plan which includes involvement and strategies contributed by the entire team is a good way to move forward with Six Sigma implementation.

The availability of resources to the team is a requirement that should not be overlooked. Both material and human resources are key to the program's success. If the resources are not provided and available in a timely manner, then the morale of the team could be affected negatively, causing the Six Sigma project to go off schedule. Smaller companies will be more likely to have resources ready at hand, whereas in larger corporations the gathering and compiling of resources may require more effort. If the Six Sigma implementation is to continue unimpeded, resources must be easily available.

The designing of a clear communication system from the onset must be of top priority. Forward thinking during the Six Sigma process is required at every step of the way to assure that the next step in the process will not be impeded by a lack of communication. All team members, from top management to Green, Yellow and Black Belts must participate in the communication process. Making sure all are informed at every step of the way is vital to the continuity of the Six Sigma implementation.

Communication of the various activities to the employees at various levels of the business has to be done. This is helpful in addressing resistance to change to a large extent. Communication has to reach out to employees, stakeholders and the senior management as well. Six Sigma is beneficial to all sorts of businesses, big or small. The implementation of such projects has to be continuous to ensure that the business starts to work to its fullest possible level.
