VOIP Phone Systems - a few Good Reasons to Switch

By Andrew John

VOIP has been 'muscling in' on conventional telecoms for quite some time - here are some of the reasons why:

1. Lower Call Rates to Terrestrial Numbers - many Voip call carriers offer low rate or free(inclusive) calls - Vonage, Telapliant, Gradwell.

2. Lower Call Rates to Mobiles - typically as good as LCR but without the stupidly long tie-ins - even chaeper with GSM gateway equipment.

3. Cheaper International Calls - most VOIP providers offer very low or inclusive international calls.

4. Reduced Line Rental Fees - many VOIP providers offer unlimited outbound trunks deals which means big savings in comparison to convetional operators.

5. Home Workers Branch Office Calls are Free - if you switch these users then all these calls will be free.

6. Much Longer Call Recording - record more calls over longer periods without the need for a dedicated system - most VOIP PBX's will do this - you just need ample hard drive capacity.

7. Keep your Geographic Number - by migrating your numbers to VOIP you can keep the number where ever you go.

8. Automatic Call Diversion - your calls will be diverted automatically upon any failure of service to any number/s of your choice.

9. Shorter Contracts - many VOIP call carriers offer shorter contract lengths - typically 1-3 months - hence you can switch without penalties.

10. Better Control - apply your own call diverts and change your phone system settings remotely at any time.

If your VOIP solution is correctly installed then you shouldn't be able to differentiate between conventional & VOIP calls. It's not always plain sailing as conventional call carriers cause number porting delays & broadband services will vary with location - success or failure will in most cases boil down to the experience or incompetence of your installer.
