How To Win The Job: Tell Them What They Need To Know...And Nothing Else

For an employer with a job to fill, the selection process is a matter of weeding out the candidates who are wrong for the job, until only the right one is left. For you to be that successful candidate, you have to keep from being weeded out, and that means you must not come across in a way the boss believes is negative.

Consider the boss's problem. He/she must take a group of, say, ten candidates and determine which one will become the new employee. The solution: Find reasons to weed out nine of the candidates, and hire the one who's left. (Unless, of course, none of them makes the cut, in which case the boss must find a new group of candidates and start the game all over again.)

It's a process that takes valuable time, and is costly to the company. The employer is often more interested in solving the problem quickly than he/she is in being objective and fair. Show even the smallest evidence of a negative in your background or your character, and you could find yourself disqualified.

When the boss is all done, there's one successful candidate, and nine who are unsuccessful.

Generally, the person who gets the job, even if there are only two or three candidates to start with, is the one who steadfastly refuses to give the boss a reason to weed him/her out. Bosses tend to play it safe, reasoning that if a candidate has no negatives, chances are he/she can do the job with little risk. You must convince the employer that you have what it takes to do the job, and no negatives that might stand in your way.

Before you can convince the boss you're the right one for the job, you must know what he/she is looking for. Don't try to sell yourself, in an interview or a letter, on the basis of your background or abilities, until you have reason to believe the boss sees them as assets. If the boss sees them as liabilities, you lose.

Don't ever forget, the employer is looking for reasons to disqualify candidates. There are ten of you, but just a single job.

If you make the case that you're an independent thinker, you could be cutting your own throat, because this company has strong centralized management. They want employees who will execute ideas that come from the top. Tell them you think independently and they'll believe you're a maverick. Result: you're out.

Volunteer that you voted as a Democrat, and you may find you"re talking to a staunch Republican who thinks you're nothing but a liberal spendthrift. So you're out.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with being an independent thinker or a Democrat. If they hired you, you'd do a fine job. But until you know something about the preferences of the company and your interviewer, keep such extraneous information to yourself. It means nothing about your ability to do the job, but it can get you disqualified.

Don't volunteer anything about yourself until you know the employer will perceive it as an asset. Until you know what he/she is looking for, keep your own counsel.

If you don't reveal something about yourself, it just doesn't exist, and you won't have to fight to explain it.

Here are some pointers that can improve your dialed to scheduled ratio:

Most importantly, have a purpose when you call. Know the highlights of the product, but don't delve into the minutia. Most call center training experts will tell you that the objective of any first contact should be to introduce yourself, the company, the product and ask for a follow up call. However, many businesses hear their rep's inundating callers with so much detail-oriented "stuff", it oftentimes scares them off. Just sell the next appointment. After the greeting, have a purpose. Most call center training research indicates that people lose interest after a few seconds. So, keep it brief, polite, and to the point. Anyone who has been enrolled in any customer service training of any repute knows that most any call should begin, "Hello, the purpose of my call is"

Finish the call using an Alternate Choice Close. When requesting an appointment, call center training tells us it's best to offer alternative times, i.e., "Are mornings or afternoons usually better for you? What's better Wednesday at 9am or Thursday at 3pm?" This trick puts you in control of the call while offering options that prevent the "I'm too busy" Whatever you do, do not limit their choices. However, presenting too few choices can scare them off as well. Present a few options, then say something like "If neither of those times work for you, is there a better day?" Customer service training from professionals will help your employees present your company in the best possible light by using these time-tested techniques.

Defer the Objection and be prepared for resistance: Know how to handle objections and tell them you will take that into consideration when you get together. The prospect will give you answers to questions you did not ask! Call center training experts agree that the best way to handle objections is to present options and, in a sense, make assumptions. You are not asking for a meeting. You are assuming that you will have a meeting, and you'd like to when is best. Your statement might be something like, "I understand your concern, other clients use the same system you have, and I will take that into consideration, (name) when we get together, when would be a good time to get together, Thursday at ___ or_____?"

Another important point to consider is the volume and tenor of your voice. If you're a bossa profundo, you could be intimidating customers. If you're a castrato, you could be annoying some customers. Whatever the case may be, just recognize when you need more or less bass in your voice. Good customer service training tells us to sound poised and professional. Always remember a prospect's nickname. Take good care of your voice. Call center training experts know regular phone users have frequent aches in their necks and throats, so get exercise and NO ice with drinks, as it can constrict your voice. And most importantly, BREATHE. Have you ever spoken with a telemarketer that couldn't stop to take a breath because they were too worried about you hanging up on them? And what did you do? Hang up. Use a confident pace.

And any experienced call center training professional will tell you that you must get "to" the Gatekeeper vs. "past" the Gatekeeper. Too often sales rep's try to get past the gatekeeper. Make them your ally. Get their name. Ask for that gatekeeper on the second try, and ask them when you should try back. Chances are they're more likely to remember you, and if you can leave a good impression, this can only open up the lines of communication. They may even recommend you the next time their tasked with a project by their manager. Hopefully these customer service training tips can make your calling time more productive and your bottom line results more profitable.

ISO 14001 Environmental Management - Corporate Manual

Small and medium size businesses with a single location that employ ISO 14001 Environmental Management System have developed solid models for the top level documentation. At the same time, information on Environmental Manuals for multi-facility companies has not been addressed in professional publications. This publication proposes a model of an Environmental Manual for establishing the top-level documentation structure that allows a business with more than one site to use a common ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Manual.

Working as an Environmental Lead Auditor for numerous international ISO registrars, I assessed dozens of big multi-facility, multi-national organizations that had difficulties with synchronizing their home office ISO 14001 Environmental Manuals with the corresponding documents controlled by their sites. Designing Environmental Manuals for companies with multiple sites, some organizations develop their sites' Environmental Manuals as copies of the corporate Environmental Manual; other enterprises create facility-specific Manuals that are totally autonomous and do not correlate with corporate ISO 14001 Manuals.

In reality, these solutions do not provide for a consistent representation of the organization's position on Environmental issues. The first approach, when a copy of the home office Environmental Manual is used, techniques for controlling local Environmental Manuals as a rule are not determined. Differences in the corporate Manual and the site's Environmental Manual are because the corporate office Manuals are managed by the home office, while site's Manuals are controlled by individual sites.

The 2nd approach, when companies permit their sites to establish their own Environmental Manuals, differences in all those Environmental Manuals lead to noticeable disconnect between the corporate and site-specific Environmental Manuals.

Those companies that adhere to the policy of maintaining a consistent corporate message regarding their position on Environmental issues will definitely experience a gap if they use methods that we discussed above.

One of our large EMS customers demonstrated this point well. The corporate ISO 14001 Environmental Manual addressed majority of the requirements of the standard and referenced appropriate regulations. At the same time, one of their US locations did not define their Environmental policy, Mexico facility did not reference local legal requirements, yet their European site failed to document their Environmental programs all together!

As one can see, both approaches above to development of sites' Environmental Manuals as copies of the corporate Manuals or independent Environmental Manuals do not appear to be practical or economical.

Fortunately, there is a solution. Let's review an example of ISO 14001 2008 Environmental Manual model that references supporting documents within the text of the Manual. For example, element 4.3.2, Legal and other requirements, may read: EMS Associates, LLP has established, implemented and maintains Legal Requirements Procedure to identify and have access to the applicable legal requirements related to the organization's environmental aspects per the Environmental Aspects Procedure,

This model proved to be effective for a single-location company. It also will work for a multi-site business, but only for common EMS documents that are used at all locations. For example, such procedures as Documentation Management, Environmental Audit, CAPA and others may be the same for your all facilities and therefore be referenced in the Environmental Manual as shown above.

But, what if your sites use their own environmental aspects procedures, country or state specific legal requirements and other unique EMS documents different form corporate procedures? Let's examine how an organization's ISO 14001 Environmental Manual can reference corporate and site-specific procedures.

As with a single-location company, a business can still use discussed reference structure if the number of locations or sites is small; let's say not to exceed three. For example, clause 4.4.1 Resources, roles, responsibility and authority may read: Hazmat Experts Company ensures the availability of resources essential to establish, implement, maintain and improve the EMS per the Resource Procedure and the Organizational Chart HO and the Organizational Chart Singapore This example references the common Resource Procedure and site-specific organizational charts for Home Office (HO) and Singapore facility. This format works well for limited number of facilities, but it becomes ineffective when the number of company's locations increases.

For companies with a large number of locations, where we need to reference numerous documents in the Manual, including those controlled by satellite locations, we have another option. We can establish a document to connect corporate Environmental Manual commitments with the site-specific supporting documents. Let's name this document a Manual Reference Matrix and consider the following document reference structure.

There is no question about the fact that we all want to optimize our websites. It will bring us the targeted and free traffic that we want. The other alternative to searching out free traffic is to use pay-per-click (PPC). I would imagine, though, if we were given the choice, we would all vote for the free traffic any day. However, one of the problems is, many people become overly dependent on SEO and when the search engines make even minor changes with their algorithms, the free traffic sometimes dries up overnight.

However, I believe that it is still necessary and beneficial to develop our SEO skills. Some think that it is very complicated and difficult to learn. In my experience, I have found it to be way easier than learning the ins and outs of PPC. Even when I first started my internet business, I found it took very little effort on my part to reach the first page of Google with my articles. Actually, the first time it happened I thought it was a fluke, but it continued to happen. It was then that I realized that the little I did know about SEO was sufficient to get me on page one of Google each and every time.

As a beginner, I was under the impression that there were well guarded secrets to ranking well with the search engines. I thought I would have to take a few courses to be effective at it. That was not the case. There is so much free information available on the Web, that a person can be educated and ready to take action in no time. I also searched on YouTube and found a number of instructional videos that helped me a lot. I now actually have people asking me what my 'secret' is.

I do, however, recommend that you always have a few back-up systems in place. After all, if you do get caught in a major algorithm change you could lose all your traffic overnight. As mentioned, pay-per-click would be one. Another alternative is to be an affiliate for other companies and products. It is free to register with Clickbank and you can be up and running with very little effort on your part.

It's a great idea to actually create a product of your own. That might sound quite intimidating to most of you, but producing a monthly newsletter or an e-book is not as difficult as you imagine. You could even list your e-book on Clickbank and have other affiliates sell your product for you.

You don't have to entirely rely on SEO to get high rankings on Google or the other search engines, such as Yahoo or MSN. However, for me personally, it is still my favorite way to rank highly. I do realize, though, that in this business things can change literally overnight, so I have involved myself in some alternatives.

So is SEO still the powerhouse it used to be and is it still as relevant as it was in the past? My answer to both of these questions is a big YES. Obviously, there might be some changes in the future, but if it is free traffic that you are looking for, then I think getting a good understanding of SEO and puting it into practice is essential.
